Day Nine - Urban Wild

Day Nine - Finding Wildness in the City whilst out shopping

In Stoke-on-Trent it is never too hard to find green spaces as there are lots of parks, fields, lakes and wild areas especially between the six towns which make up the city.  It is also criss-crossed by the River Trent and both the Trent and Mersey Canal and the Caldon Canal.

An area of green can be found in Etruria for where Josiah Wedgwood's factory, family home and model village for his factory workers used to stand there are now businesses and retail outlets and entertainment venues like a ski slope, cinema, marina and Waterworld.  The Wedgwood family home is a hotel and there are loads of woodland walks with interesting features because in the 1980s this area was the site of the Stoke Garden Festival one of several that happened at that time which helped to regenerate land in industrial cities.  I remember going to the one at Gateshead.

Today for day nine of 30 Days Wild we went for a little walk around the park to find nature in an urban setting.

A little walk from the supermarket to the Marina

Steps and bridges left over from the Garden Festival

Lots of trees around the new buildings

  2. I didn't know Wedgwood's factory etc were all in Etruria once. I've only ever driven through on the A53 (and called at Morrisons!) so I had no idea about the woodland walks or nature-y side of it! Very interesting! I did know that the park was named because of the festivals but I don't know anything them really as I wasn't born until 1983!
